Jaeger-LeCoultre Exhibits a Private Collection of 40 Exceptional Memovox Watches

At Artcurial Auction House from November 24th to 28th, 2010

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Memovox, Jaeger-LeCoultre is associating with a major collector to present 40 historical Memovox watches. This exceptional exhibition will be held at Artcurial Auction House during the first appraisal days preceding the “Jaeger-LeCoultre Unique Auction” to be held in Paris in the autumn of 2011.

The Memovox, meaning “voice of memory”, is an iconic Jaeger-LeCoultre model introduced in 1950. It was powered by the first automatic movement in watchmaking history to be equipped with an alarm function: Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 815. Representing an extremely rare case, this legendary movement is still being produced 60 years after its creation, having been tirelessly improved and enhanced by the engineers and watchmakers of the Manufacture in order to meet the latest technological demands.

In aesthetic terms, the Memovox has been interpreted over the years in many different versions tailored to the trends of successive eras, in turn classic or sporty. It is a watch that remains highly sought-after among collectors.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of this legendary model, Jaeger-LeCoultre will be exhibiting a fabulous collection at Artcurial Auction House, comprising 40 Memovox watches from the 1950s to the 1970s and acquired over several years by a French collector. Together, they undoubtedly form the most complete collection ever presented to the public.

Some inescapable models such as one of the first 1950 Memovox watches with “roller”-type lugs, the Memovox Parking (1958) or the famous Memovox Deep Sea (1959) and Polaris (1968) will be on show. The public will also be able to admire several extremely rare models, such as the Memovox Snow Drop featuring a blue dial (197), Memovox models produced in extremely small series (up to 100), as well as a stunning 1967 model with a brown and red dial. This represents a unique opportunity to discover all the forerunners of the contemporary Master Memovox and Master Memovox Internationale watches presented this year.

This exhibition will also give all collectors the chance of coming to present their Jaeger-LeCoultre watches and clocks during the appraisal days held in preparation for the “Jaeger-LeCoultre Unique Auction” to be organised by Artcurial in Paris at the end of 2011.

Girard-Perregaux to Manufacture Ermenegildo Zegna Watches

Ermenegildo Zegna, CEO of the Zegna Group, and Gino Macaluso, majority shareholder of Sowind Group, which heads Girard-Perregaux and Jeanrichard, announce a partnership agreement for the design and production of Ermenegildo Zegna Watches.

Ermenegildo Zegna will utilise the know-how of the Sowind Group in the design, production and services to develop a specific collection of watches that reflect the tradition, style and values of Ermenegildo Zegna, which are identified fully in the technical and quality parameters of Swiss high end watch making.

The Ermenegildo Zegna Watch Collection will be available exclusively from Ermenegildo Zegna Flagship Stores around the world from 2011. The agreement is long term, as is always necessary in the Haute Horlogerie sector.

This partnership unites two sectors, Fashion and Haute Horlogerie, who may seem different yet share the same constant quest for perfection and the global mastery of a distinct expertise. The relationship between Gildo Zegna and Gino Macaluso is founded on common affinities in which the research of excellence, innovation and professional ethics prevail.

Gildo Zegna CEO of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group said: “After the successful launch of the Centennial Limited Edition Watch developed in cooperation with Girard Perregaux, the natural progression was to consolidate our partnership and embark on a new adventure. The concept is to create a range of Ermenegildo Zegna watches, made exclusively in Switzerland, of very specific design, which is precisely what our clients need and expect from our brand. The collaboration with Sowind, with whom we share beliefs and philosophy, will utilize the specific know-how of the Swiss watch making sector, to further complete the Zegna world and consolidate our position as the leader in men’s luxury”

Gino Macaluso CEO of Sowind Group said “This partnership is an interesting tale of two families whose commitment and work ethic have become their own life philosophy, and who have chosen to travel together along a new mutual path while still maintaining their own identities. I am sure that from our side working with the fashion world will be a very informative experience. The incredible qualitative values of style and Italian know-how will merge well with the uniqueness and excellence of the top end Swiss watch making.”

Jaeger-LeCoultre Devotes Book to Extreme Watches

“Everything always begins with an adventure. The desire to discover, to overcome, to attain. How about setting off for a far-distant destination?… Wouldn’t it be great to climb right to the top of that mountain?… Why not descend to the very depths of the ocean?… But adventure is not only about geography or sportsmanship. It can also be about inventing something truly novel, about creating, imagining, innovating. This book is dedicated to all adventurers, explorers and other conquerors of the impossible. It tells the story of challenges, efforts and triumphs. It also tells of a key element in many such feats: time.”

Jérôme Lambert, CEO, Jaeger-LeCoultre

Jaeger-LeCoultre has decided to bring together all these adventures, these heroes and these exceptional watches within a book based on an original concept. Page after page, readers are immersed into the heart of the various feats depicted and described, as well as into the core of the revolutionary mechanisms that have been making their mark on watchmaking history for over 170 years.

When the Nautilus submarine was first commissioned to slip under the ice pack in order to be the first to reach the North Pole in submerged mode, Jaeger-LeCoultre developed the Geophysic chronometer, equipped with a case impervious to magnetic fields.

When scuba diving became a leisure sport, Jaeger-LeCoultre invented the Memovox Deep Sea, the world’s first diver’s watch equipped with an alarm.

When Emannuel Coindre set out to row solo across the North Pacific, he was wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Extreme World Chronograph.

When Valentino Rossi, the most gifted motorcycle racer of all time, hits the track, he does it with a Master Compressor Extreme W-Alarm on his wrist.

When Jaeger-LeCoultre checks the water resistance of the Master Compressor Diving GMT, the test takes place in real-life conditions at a depth of 1,000 meters.

When Aston Martin racing drivers take part in the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race, they choose the AMVOX2 watch, the first pushpiece-free chronograph.

When three mountaineers wished to pay tribute to the most extreme watch ever developed and produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre, they took the Master Compressor Extreme LAB2 Tribute to Geophysic to the top of the world, in the Himalayas.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has chosen to present these feats, these adventures and these watches by providing a fascinating account of each in words and pictures. In this book infused with genuine passion, produced in cooperation with Stephan Ciejka, editor-in-chief of the Revue des Montres, watchmaking technology remains discreetly in the background in order to give pride of place to human beings, to dreams and to emotions.

Jaeger-LeCoultre, Extreme Watches for an Extreme World, is an exclusive book dedicated to all lovers of fine watchmaking.
